I have been feeding the birds in my backyard for a few months now. I love watching them and am learning the different behaviors of different birds....who knew Blue Jays were so cautious when coming to the feeders? Because we live in the woods, however, I have also been feeding the squirrels, the raccoon and the groundhog. Yes, groundhogs are herbivores, but apparently they ALL love nuts!

We live in a very wooded area as well. I had to switch to safflower seed only so the squirrels leave it be! 🤪

I have also been using the spicy seed which they stay away from.

Growing up there was a bluebird couple that nested in our bird box one spring. The male and I would get to singing together, back and forth with me standing only a few feet from him and the nest. One day his mate caught us. Instead of attacking me, she let out her furry on her mate for letting such a dangerous predator as myself so close to the nest. Needless to say I never tried resuming the relationship with the bluebird. Who knew that they had such complex relationships?

My mom was sitting on the ground in a park one day when a duck waddled up and sat in her lap! 🙂

Two attacks while bicycling. A Canadian goose protecting his goslings. I came away with a bruised arm, but he didn't tip me off my bike. The other was a red-winged blackbird protecting the nearby nests. Both were unforgettable. Poor James!

Jen Niemann's avatar

Oh my!! Yes he’s still pretty perturbed with the bird. Sounds like he was just in the wrong place at the wrong time!!

I've had lots of red winged black birds diving over me when I'm near a nest and the geese hiss at me when I come too close, but I've never been attacked! Poor James. I can just see and hear his reaction!😉

Jen Niemann's avatar

Yes he’s still quite upset about the whole thing!! He did ok me posting the story though. 😉

Oh my goodness! This is amazing! James must have unknowingly threatened it. Or else, he has a very appealing head! 😁

Maureen, we think it might have been protecting a nest or thought his head looked like a critter. But he was merely walking along the road like he’s done for 28 years!! 🤦🏻‍♀️
